Maine roads are the most used mode of transportation in the state, but Maine has the lowest funding per mile of the six New England states and a projected $68 million annual funding gap.
This evaluation shows that due to the funding shortfall, combined with deteriorating roadway conditions and increasing traffic volumes, Maine’s roads are not meeting the customer service level goals set forth by the state legislature. Consequently, Maine motorists spend an extra $1 billion per year in vehicle operating costs, congestion delays, and crashes. To address these deficiencies, Maine must continue to maximize existing revenue streams as well as find additional funding sources
